Overview
Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus is a highly translucent, solvent-borne, mat woodstain for use on exterior softwood and hardwood substrates. It’s a low-build formula that absorbs into the wood allowing the natural grain and quality of wood to show through. It can be used as a 3 coat system on cladding, fascias, soffits, rough sawn timber, fencing, decking, garden furniture and handrails. As well as a base stain on bare smooth joiner before the use of higher build finishes such as .

Preparation
Always ensure the surface to be treated is clean, dry and free from any dust, algae, fungi or moss.
- Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper.
- Degrease the surface with a lint free cloth and suitable solvent, allow to evaporate fully before applying Sikkens.
- For previously stained or weathered wood use a fine sandpaper of 120 or 240 grit to abrade the surface working in the direction of the grain.
- Dust down entire surface.
- Fill any cracks, holes or chips, always use a filler designed for timber.
- Please always follow instructions of manufacturer when staining new wood as some substrates will require leaching time.
Application
Before applying stir the product thoroughly and test a small area to ensure colour and adhesion. Colours can vary dependant on surface to be treated. This product can not be sprayed.
- Do not apply when there is the risk of rain or when temperatures are below 5°C or above 30°C.
- Protect from frost and rain until dry.
- Always ensure product is fully mixed before and during application to ensure consistency in colour.
- Do not thin.
- For application use a good quality, long-haired, soft bristle brush.
- Apply along the grain in even strokes and avoid over brushing.
- Pay special attention to areas of exposed grain, tops and bottoms of doors and undersides of cills.
- Excess surface liquid should re-distributed after 5-20 minutes using a dry brush.
- Allow a minimum of 18-24 hours drying time.
- To apply a 3 coat system, lightly sand between each coat with a 240 grit or lighter sandpaper, do not break the surface coating.
- Remove all dust before re-applying.
- To use as a base coat, after applying one coat continue with a top coat such as .
- Subsequent coatings should be applied as soon as possible after the previous coat has dried, but no sooner than 12-24 hours, in order to provide full protection.
- Additional preparation may be required if over 3 months between coats.
